What is meant by excess hair?
Excessive hair growth refers to abnormal or excessive hair growth on certain parts of the body. This means that more hair grows than is normally expected based on age, gender, and ethnic background. Excessive hair growth can affect both men and women and can affect different areas of the body, such as the face, chest, back, legs, arms, or other areas.

Excess hair can have a variety of causes, including genetics, hormonal changes, certain medical conditions (such as polycystic ovary syndrome), medications, hormonal disorders, or heredity. It can cause both cosmetic and emotional discomfort, and affect a person’s self-confidence.

Laser hair removal at Swiss Allure offers an ideal solution for excessive hair growth.

Is laser hair removal painful?
In general, laser hair removal is not painful, but you may experience a warm sensation during the treatment. The feeling is often described as a warm skin, followed by a cooling pack. However, tolerance for heat can vary from person to person.

At Swiss Allure we make sure you are comfortable during the treatment. If needed, we can stop at any time to apply more cooling gel. This gel helps to reduce the heat and soothes the skin for a pleasant experience. Our team is very attentive and ready to listen to your needs and make any adjustments.

We aim to provide a relaxing and effective experience, ensuring both optimal results and your comfort. Please feel free to discuss any questions or concerns you may have before we begin, so we can ensure you feel completely at ease during your treatment.

At Swiss Allure, we combine expertise with care to provide you with the best possible experience. We look forward to welcoming you and helping you achieve your desired results, while ensuring that you feel comfortable and satisfied.

Am I eligible for laser hair removal?
Good news! At Swiss Allure we offer laser hair removal for all skin and hair types. Whether you have light skin with dark hair, darker skin or even lighter hair, we have advanced laser systems that are suitable for different hair colors and skin tones.

Our qualified professionals will perform a thorough assessment during a consultation to determine which laser is best suited for your unique features. We customize our treatments to achieve the best results, regardless of your skin and hair type.

Whether you want to treat your legs, arms, bikini line, face or other areas of the body, laser hair removal can be an effective and long-lasting solution. We recommend scheduling a consultation to discuss your options and clarify your expectations.

How old do you have to be for laser hair removal?
The minimum age to be treated at Swiss Allure is 12 years. Until the age of 18, written permission from a parent or guardian is required.

In addition to the legal reasons for setting an age threshold, there are also physical reasons. In young people, the body is still developing, which means that permanent hair removal often does not have the desired effect. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you only start laser hair removal from the age of 16.

Can I have blonde hair treated?
While traditional laser hair removal can be less effective when treating blonde hair, there are advanced technologies available that can also produce good results with lighter hair colors. At Swiss Allure, we use innovative laser systems that are specifically designed to effectively treat blonde hair as well.

Our specialist professionals will conduct a thorough assessment during a consultation to determine if you are a candidate for laser hair removal and which laser is best suited for your hair colour and skin type. They will carefully tailor the treatment to your individual needs and strive for optimal results.

While blonde hair may require more treatments than darker hair types, our advanced lasers can still be effective at reducing hair growth and achieving smooth skin. It is important to have realistic expectations and understand that results can vary from person to person.

Can I combine laser hair removal with (top) sports?
Yes, laser hair removal can definitely be combined with (top) sports activities. Many athletes choose laser hair removal because of the benefits, such as reduced hair growth, convenience and improved performance.

Laser hair removal can help you reduce or even permanently remove unwanted hair, giving you more time for your sports activities and workouts. It also helps reduce skin irritation that often comes with regular shaving or other hair removal methods, which is especially beneficial for athletes.

However, it is important to wait 24 hours after laser hair removal treatment before resuming intense physical activity or sports. This may vary depending on your practitioner's specific instructions and the sensitivity of your skin after treatment.

Can I combine laser hair removal with plastic surgery?
Yes, laser hair removal can often be combined with plastic surgery, depending on the type of procedure and your plastic surgeon’s recommendations. Many people choose to have laser hair removal as a complement to their plastic surgery procedures to achieve an overall improvement in their appearance and self-confidence.

For example, laser hair removal can be used to remove unwanted hair from areas such as the face, armpits, legs, or bikini line before undergoing a plastic surgery procedure. This can result in smoother, more even skin and can make the recovery process after surgery more comfortable.

It is important to consult with both your plastic surgeon and our laser specialist to determine the best course of action. They can advise you on the timing of laser treatments in relation to your plastic surgery procedure and provide any specific guidelines for aftercare and recovery.

What is permanent hair removal?
Permanent hair removal, also known as permanent hair removal, refers to the reduction or removal of unwanted hair on a long-term or permanent basis. Unlike temporary hair removal methods, permanent hair removal focuses on destroying the hair follicles so that new hair cannot grow.

One of the most effective methods for permanent hair removal is laser hair removal. It uses concentrated light energy to absorb and heat the pigment in the hair follicles, damaging the follicles and reducing hair growth.

While laser hair removal is very effective at reducing hair growth, it is important to note that it is not always 100% permanent. Some new hair may grow back over time, but it is usually thinner and lighter in color. Periodic maintenance treatments may be necessary to address these new hairs and maintain long-term results.

The number of treatments required varies depending on factors such as hair type, hair color, skin color, and the area treated. Generally, 6 to 8 sessions are needed to achieve the best results.

It is advisable to schedule an intake to discuss your specific situation and create a customized treatment plan. We can advise you on the suitability and feasibility of permanent hair removal for your skin and hair type.

Permanent hair removal can be a great option for those who want to enjoy smooth, hair-free skin for a long time. However, it is important to have realistic expectations and understand that results can vary from person to person.

Which skin and hair types can be treated?
Laser hair removal is suitable for a wide range of skin and hair types, including different colours and textures. Our state-of-the-art laser systems are designed to be effective on both light and dark skin tones and can target hair growth whether the hair is blonde, brown, black or red.

In terms of skin tone, our modern lasers are equipped with advanced technologies such as cooled heads and adjustable settings, allowing treatments to be performed safely on a variety of skin tones. Even people with dark or tanned skin can now benefit from laser hair removal without any adverse side effects.

It is important to note that laser hair removal results can vary from person to person, even with the same skin and hair types. Factors such as hair density, thickness, and growth cycle can affect results. A qualified laser hair removal professional will assess your skin and hair type and provide you with the best recommendations based on your specific situation.

Before or after laser treatment

How can I prepare for laser treatment?
Before the first treatment, there is always an intake interview. During this interview, we will inform you about the treatment, what you can expect and we will offer you the opportunity to ask questions. In addition, it is possible to undergo a trial treatment on both armpits, so that you can experience how the treatment works. We will then schedule an appointment for the first treatment.

In addition, we will provide some preparation advice, such as avoiding waxing and plucking the area to be treated prior to treatment, as well as other steps you can take to make the treatment as effective and comfortable as possible.

It is also recommended to avoid exposing the area to excessive sunlight or using a tanning bed for 1 week prior to treatment, and discourage the use of self-tanning creams. This does not mean that you should stay out of the sun completely, but avoid prolonged exposure to the area being treated.

The day before the treatment, we ask you to shave the area to be treated as smoothly as possible. This ensures that the heat from the laser goes directly to the hair roots, making the treatment more effective and less painful. The heat is felt best on the skin surface, and by shaving the heat penetrates deeper into the skin.

Can I wear make-up before laser treatment?
It is generally best not to wear make-up on the treatment area before laser treatment, as this can reduce the effectiveness of the treatment. Before treatment, we advise you to thoroughly remove all make-up and skin care products from the treatment area, so that the laser energy can penetrate the hair follicles and achieve optimal results. If you are unable to remove all make-up, we will help you with this.

After the treatment, you can usually wear make-up again, unless otherwise advised by your laser specialist. However, make sure you use mild products that do not irritate the skin, especially if the treated skin has become sensitive due to the laser treatment.

Can I use deodorant before laser treatment?
It is generally not recommended to apply deodorant or antiperspirant to the treatment area prior to laser treatment, as this can create a barrier between the skin and the laser, which can reduce the effectiveness of the treatment. For optimal results, we recommend thoroughly removing deodorant or antiperspirant prior to your laser treatment. If this is not possible, we will assist you with this.

After the treatment, you can usually use deodorant again, unless otherwise advised by your laser specialist. However, make sure you choose a mild deodorant that does not irritate the skin, especially if the treated skin has become sensitive due to the laser treatment.

Can I shave or wax between treatments?
For laser hair removal, it is recommended not to use methods such as waxing or plucking on the areas to be treated between treatments, as these methods remove the hair follicles that are targeted by the laser treatment. However, shaving is allowed between treatments and up to 1 day before treatment.

Can I skip a treatment?
It is generally not advisable to skip treatments during a laser hair removal regimen, as consistency is important for achieving optimal results. Skipping treatments can reduce the effectiveness and ultimate results of the laser treatment. The treatment plan is designed to effectively reduce hair growth, and skipping treatments can disrupt this process.

The treatment course is usually scheduled at intervals that are aligned with the hair growth cycle. Skipping a treatment may result in some hair follicles not being treated at the optimal time, which may delay the desired result.

What does the skin analysis during the intake interview look like?
At Swiss Allure, the laser hair removal process begins with a thorough skin analysis during the intake interview. During this analysis, we will carefully examine the condition of your skin and discuss your medical history and any skin problems. This allows us to create a personalized treatment plan that is tailored to your specific needs and skin type.

During the skin analysis, our expert laser specialist will look at factors such as skin color, skin sensitivity, hair type and hair growth density. This helps us determine the most appropriate laser settings and treatment methods to achieve optimal results.

We will also discuss any questions or concerns you may have and explain all the details of the treatment process, including possible side effects and aftercare instructions.

At Swiss Allure we strive for transparency and open communication. We encourage you to ask any questions you may have during your intake so we can ensure you are fully informed and comfortable before we begin your laser treatments.

Our goal is to provide you with a professional and personalized experience, focusing on your individual needs and goals.

How soon after the treatments can I see results?
The timeline for seeing results after laser hair removal treatments can vary from person to person. Multiple treatments are usually necessary to achieve desired results, as laser hair removal is effective at reducing hair growth in the long term.

After each treatment, there may be a gradual reduction in hair growth. Some people notice a difference after the first few treatments, while for others, results become more gradual over several sessions. It is important to be patient and complete the full treatment process for optimal results.

The number of treatments required varies from person to person and depends on several factors, such as hair type, skin color, the area being treated and individual response to treatment. Typically, between 6 and 8 treatments are recommended, with intervals of 4 to 6 weeks.

During a consultation at Swiss Allure, our expert laser specialist will discuss a more specific treatment plan with you, including the expected timeline for results based on your individual situation.

Remember, consistency and adherence to your treatment plan are key to achieving the best results. By being patient and following your laser therapist’s recommendations, you can ultimately enjoy long-term hair reduction and smoother skin.

How much time is there between laser treatments?
The time between laser treatments usually varies from 4 to 6 weeks. These intervals are designed to ensure that the hair growth cycle is optimally utilized during treatment.

Hair grows in different phases, including the growth phase, transition phase and resting phase. Laser treatments are most effective when the hair is in the active growth phase. By scheduling treatments at 4 to 6 week intervals, we can ensure that we treat as many hair follicles as possible in the active growth phase.

It is important to maintain these intervals between treatments to achieve the best results. This also gives the skin enough time to recover between sessions.

During the intake interview, our laser therapist will discuss a specific treatment plan with you, including the recommended time between treatments, based on your individual needs and the area to be treated.

It is important to follow the treatment plan closely and adhere to the recommended intervals to achieve the best results. If you have any questions about the length of time between treatments, please do not hesitate to contact our expert laser specialists.

Can I go into the sun after laser treatment?
After laser treatment it is generally recommended to avoid direct sun exposure. The skin may be more sensitive and susceptible to sun damage after treatment.

Laser treatment can temporarily make the skin more sensitive and can lead to redness, irritation or even blistering. Exposure to the sun can worsen these side effects and delay healing.

It is therefore important to protect the treated skin from the sun for 2 days after the laser treatment. This can be done by wearing protective clothing, using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF and avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

Is the treatment suitable for all skin types?
Yes, the treatment is generally suitable for all skin types because we can set the laser to any skin type. Thanks to the innovative properties of the Diode Ice Laser, we can now also treat a dark skin color. This is because the Diode Ice Laser not only works on the pigment, but also affects the proteins at the bottom of the hair follicle. As a result, the hair follicle loses its nourishing properties and can no longer grow new hair.

Is the treatment suitable for all hair types/colours?
Yes, in principle lighter hairs can also be treated, but there are exceptions. During the intake interview we will assess whether a good result can be achieved. Due to the innovative properties of the Diode Ice Laser we can now also treat lighter hairs, because this laser not only works on the pigment, but also affects the proteins at the bottom of the hair follicle. As a result, the hair follicle loses its nourishing properties and new hair can no longer grow.

Is the treatment painful?
No, thanks to the advanced laser techniques, the treatment is generally 100% painless.

From what age can treatment be started?
The laser treatments are in principle suitable for all ages. For young people under 18 years old, we do ask permission from the parents/representatives. However, remember that hair growth in young people may have just started and laser treatment is then of little use.

Can laser treatment be performed on tanned skin?
Yes, even a tanned skin can be treated with the Diode Ice Laser. This is because this laser technique effectively targets the proteins in the hair follicle and not just the pigment of the skin. You can be treated at Swiss Allure at any time of year, including the summer months. However, we recommend that you do not sunbathe extensively or use a tanning bed for 1 week before your treatment and 48 hours after your treatment. Your skin simply needs to rest.

Is permanent hair removal really permanent?
In the growth phase, the hairs are in direct contact with the hair follicles. Treatment in this phase means that both the hair and the hair follicle are destroyed, meaning that they will stay away for good! However, hair growth is hormonal. This means that when hormone levels are thrown out of balance by, for example, pregnancy or medication, the body can activate “dormant hair follicles” from which new hairs could grow. These new hairs can grow in the area that was previously treated, but the amount of new hair growth will not be comparable to the amount of hair that was present before the treatment.

Can laser treatment be performed during or after pregnancy?
No, Swiss Allure does not recommend treatments during pregnancy or up to 6 months after pregnancy due to the influence of pregnancy hormones on the outcome of the treatment.

Is laser treatment safe?
Yes, treatment with the Diode Ice Laser is completely safe. Unlike other devices, the Diode Ice Laser works with a moving method that ensures that the skin is heated in a safe and gentle way to a temperature that destroys the hair follicle. The temperature that the laser reaches is often experienced as pleasant.

When is laser treatment not permitted?
Laser treatment is not recommended if you:

  • are pregnant;
  • is breastfeeding;
  • suffers from epilepsy;
  • have a fever or infection;
  • are taking medication that makes your skin sensitive to light;
  • taking anti-inflammatories;
  • have a pacemaker;
  • have piercings, tattoos or an implant in the area to be treated.

If you have any questions about your specific situation, please feel free to contact us. Our laser specialists can provide you with more detailed information.

Can I undergo laser hair removal if I have cancer?
Laser hair removal is generally not recommended for individuals with active cancer or tumors, especially if they are undergoing treatments like chemotherapy or radiation. These treatments can make the skin more sensitive, increasing the risk of adverse effects from the laser.

Why is laser hair removal not safe during cancer treatment?
Cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy, can cause increased skin sensitivity, compromised immune response, and delayed healing. Additionally, laser treatments could potentially interact with cancerous tissues, especially near tumors.

How long after cancer treatment can I safely get laser hair removal?
It is generally advised to wait at least 6 months to 1 year to wait after completing chemotherapy before considering laser hair removal. If you have had radiation therapy, especially in the areas where you want to have laser treatments, it may be necessary to 1-2 years to wait. Always consult your oncologist before proceeding.

Can I have laser hair removal after cancer surgery?
If you have had surgery to remove a tumor, you will need to wait until the surgical area has completely healed, which can take several months. Your doctor will need to evaluate the area to determine if it is safe for laser treatment.

Is laser hair removal safe if I have had skin cancer?
If you have had skin cancer, you should avoid laser hair removal on or near the area where the cancer was present. Discuss your situation with a dermatologist or oncologist to assess safety.

Can laser hair removal cause cancer to return?
There is no evidence that laser hair removal can cause cancer or cause it to recur. However, caution is advised for people with a history of cancer to avoid possible complications during treatment. Always follow medical advice.

Can I have laser hair removal if I am in remission from cancer?
If you are in remission, it is important that your oncologist or dermatologist evaluates your health before proceeding with laser hair removal. After a thorough recovery period, it may be safe, but this depends on your specific medical history.

What should I do before considering laser hair removal after cancer treatment?

  • Consult your oncologist or doctor to determine if it is safe based on your cancer type, treatments and recovery.
  • Wait until the skin and immune system have recovered after treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation.
  • Avoid laser treatments on areas that have been irradiated or where skin cancer was present.

Are there alternatives to laser hair removal for cancer patients?
For people undergoing cancer treatments or recovering, non-invasive hair removal methods such as shaving or using mild depilatory creams may be safer options. Waxing or plucking should be avoided due to increased skin sensitivity.

How can I ensure a safe experience if I decide to have laser hair removal after cancer?

  • Work with a qualified professional experienced in treating clients with medical conditions.
  • Start with a test spot to see how your skin responds to the treatment.
  • Inform the healthcare provider about your medical history and previous treatments.

Are there areas of the body that are particularly at risk for laser hair removal after cancer?
Yes, areas that have been exposed to radiation or affected by skin cancer are particularly sensitive. Laser hair removal should be avoided on or near these areas without a doctor's approval.

Is laser hair removal covered by insurance after cancer treatment?
Laser hair removal is usually considered a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by insurance, even for cancer patients. However, it is wise to contact your insurer for specific information.

Always consult a health care provider before beginning cosmetic procedures after cancer treatment.

Can you laser an area with a tattoo?
It is not recommended to remove hair from body parts with tattoos with the laser due to the risk of the ink being attracted into the skin, which can lead to harmful consequences such as burns, blisters, fading or even deformation of the tattoo.

How much do the laser treatments cost?
View our price list. If the body part you want to have treated is not on the price list, our specialists can provide you with personal advice. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us without obligation.

Does Swiss Allure offer a guarantee?
We cannot guarantee the final result of the treatments as this is highly dependent on individual factors. However, we strive for satisfaction and our team is committed to achieving the maximum result and providing a satisfying experience until the status of ‘completed treatment’ is reached.

Why would laser treatment be effective if previous treatments elsewhere were not effective enough?
We don't know how it was treated elsewhere, but it could be that the wavelength of our lasers and our treatment method are more effective. We see good results with customers who have switched from IPL to us, for example.

I have a lot of skin irritations, can you still perform laser treatments?
We can laser, but the treatment may be more sensitive if there is a lot of irritation. However, we do not laser open wounds.

Can I continue to remove hair if I am undergoing laser treatment?
During the treatment it is not allowed to epilate, wax or use depilatory cream on the area to be treated because this can affect the result of the laser treatment. Only shaving is allowed. Before the first treatment you may not epilate, wax or use depilatory cream for 4 weeks.

Can I apply make-up immediately after laser treatment?
Yes, after the treatment it is possible to apply make-up. This also applies to body lotion and deodorant. However, wait 1 week before using tanning products. Our laser specialists will be happy to provide more information about this.

Can I cancel an appointment?
If you are unable to attend, we request that you cancel your appointment at least 24 hours before the treatment. If this does not happen, we will be forced to charge 40% of the amount to be paid.

Can I exercise/sweat after laser treatment?
You can resume your normal workout on the day of laser treatment, but be careful with hot showers. Hot baths and saunas can only be resumed 24 hours after laser treatment.

What is the difference between bikini line and pubic area?
With the bikini line, you decide which hairs remain, such as under the edge of your underwear, a stripe or a triangle. With a pubic area, we remove all hairs completely. During the treatment, we discuss how much you may want to leave.

What is the background of your laser specialists?
Our laser specialists are all certified skin therapists, who have the right certificates and courses to be allowed to work with our Diode Ice Laser. They regularly follow refresher courses to keep their knowledge up-to-date. The customers are always central, and they strive to provide everyone with the best possible care.

What aftercare should I do after a treatment?
After the treatment it is important to take good care of the skin and avoid exposure to the sun. Our laser specialists will give you extensive instructions for aftercare, including the use of moisturizing creams and sunscreen.

What is the difference between IPL and laser hair removal?
The main difference between IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and laser hair removal is the technology used. IPL uses a broad spectrum of light with multiple wavelengths, while laser hair removal uses a single wavelength of concentrated light. Laser hair removal is generally more precise and effective at removing unwanted hair, especially on darker skin types.

In addition, laser hair removal is usually faster than IPL because the laser energy penetrates deeper into the hair follicles, destroying them more effectively. IPL can sometimes be less effective at removing fine or light-colored hair, while laser hair removal is suitable for a variety of hair types and skin tones.

At Swiss Allure we use the Diode Ice Laser, which is more effective than IPL for achieving long-term hair reduction. Our expert laser specialists can help you choose the most suitable treatment based on your individual needs and hair type.

What are the advantages of laser hair removal over other hair removal methods?
Laser hair removal has several advantages over traditional hair removal methods such as shaving, waxing or plucking. Some of the advantages are:

  1. Long-lasting results: Laser hair removal can provide long-term hair reduction, permanently reducing unwanted hair after multiple treatments.
  2. Less painful: Compared to waxing or epilation, laser hair removal is generally less painful, with minimal discomfort during treatment.
  3. Faster: Laser hair removal can treat larger areas of the body quickly, making it an efficient option for removing hair on areas such as the legs, back or chest.
  4. Suitable for different skin types and hair colors: Modern lasers such as the Diode Ice Laser can effectively treat different skin types and hair colors, including darker skin tones and lighter colored hair.
  5. Less chance of ingrown hairs: Because laser hair removal destroys the hair follicles, there is less chance of ingrown hairs compared to shaving or epilation.

Although laser hair removal has many benefits, it is important to have a thorough skin analysis and the treatment performed by a qualified and experienced laser specialist to achieve the best results.

Do you have experience with transgender people?
Yes, we have experience with transgender individuals and provide an inclusive and respectful environment for all clients, regardless of gender, gender identity, or gender expression. Our laser specialists are trained to work with diverse clients and understand the sensitivity of gender-related treatments. We strive to provide a safe and supportive space where everyone feels comfortable and can receive the treatments they desire.

What should I do if I experience irritation or side effects after the treatment?
It is normal to experience some side effects after laser treatment, such as redness, swelling or mild irritation of the skin. These side effects are usually mild and disappear within a few days.

If you experience severe irritation, blistering or any other unusual side effects, please contact our clinic immediately for advice and support. Our laser specialists can provide you with personalized aftercare instructions and may recommend additional treatments to help minimize any side effects.

It is also important to follow the aftercare instructions given to you by our laser specialists to promote healing and achieve optimal results. This may include using soothing creams, avoiding sun exposure, and wearing loose clothing to prevent friction with the treated skin.

Our laser specialists are always available to answer any questions or concerns and support you during the recovery process after laser treatment. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need assistance or if you are unsure about possible side effects.

Acupuncture treatment

What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a form of therapy in which needles are placed on specific points on the body. This practice, which dates back thousands of years, originated in China but is now increasingly used in modern medicine worldwide.

How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture stimulates the body to produce its own pain-relieving chemicals known as “endorphins.” These help to release the blockages that send pain messages from the body to the brain, resulting in pain relief, general relaxation, and promotion of the body’s natural internal regulatory mechanisms. By improving biochemical balance, the body’s natural ability to heal is stimulated, inflammation is reduced, and both physical and emotional well-being is promoted.

Is acupuncture safe?
In general, acupuncture is very safe and has very few side effects. Sterile disposable needles are used.

Does acupuncture have side effects?
Side effects and complications from acupuncture are very rare. Most patients find the treatments relaxing and cause minimal discomfort.

Some possible side effects include:

  • Drowsiness, which may occur in a small number of patients after treatment. In case of drowsiness it is advised not to drive.
  • Minor bleeding or bruising, which occurs after acupuncture in approximately 3% of treatments.
  • Muscle twitching during or after acupuncture, occurring in approximately 3% of treatments.
  • Local pain at the puncture site, which occurs after acupuncture in approximately 2% of treatments.
  • Existing symptoms may temporarily worsen before improving after treatment, an effect that affects less than 3% of patients. This is usually considered a positive sign.

Is there anything your acupuncturist should know?
In addition to the standard medical information, it is important to inform your acupuncturist of:

  • Any existing medical conditions.
  • Pregnancy or the possibility of pregnancy.
  • Previous experiences of dizziness, fainting or epileptic seizures.
  • The use of a pacemaker or other electronic implants.
  • The use of anticoagulants (blood thinners) or other medications.
  • Hemophilia.
  • Allergies, including metal allergies.

Does it hurt?
Most patients experience only minimal discomfort when the needles are inserted. Some feel no pain at all. Once the needles are in place, there should be no discomfort. Acupuncture needles are very thin; two or three of them can fit into the shaft of a normal hollow hypodermic needle.

What to do before an acupuncture treatment?

  • Eat a light meal or snack within 2 hours before the treatment.
  • Do not drink alcohol, use barbiturates or tranquilizers for 4 hours before treatment.
  • Do not smoke for 1 hour before treatment.
  • Continue to take all medications as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Make sure you are well rested for the treatment, if possible.
  • It is wise to have a companion to drive you home after your first appointment, in case the treatment makes you drowsy or light-headed.

What to do after acupuncture treatment?

  • Rest for 2 hours, if possible.
  • Avoid strenuous activity for 2 days after treatment if the treatment is for a painful condition, even if you do not feel pain.
  • Continue to take all medications as prescribed by your doctor.

What can you expect from the treatment?
The number of treatments required varies by person and condition. Relief may be noticed immediately, within hours of treatment, or after a few days. Some people do not respond to acupuncture at all. Occasionally, symptoms may temporarily worsen before improving. Recent illnesses often require only a few treatments, while long-term conditions may require 1-2 treatments per week before improvement is seen.

What are the results of acupuncture?
Nearly all clients experience an immediate improvement in their overall well-being and energy levels. Extensive research has shown that acupuncture has a demonstrably positive effect on 80% of people who undergo the treatment:

  • In 45% of people the complaint is completely resolved.
  • In 35% of people the complaint has been significantly reduced.
  • The remainder experience significant improvement and return periodically for treatment.

What do I feel from the small needles?
In general, one feels almost nothing of the thin needles, because they are only inserted superficially into the skin. Clients often indicate that acupuncture is little to painless.

Are the treatments reimbursed?
The treatments of an acupuncturist who is a member of the Dutch Association for Acupuncture (NVA) are usually reimbursed by the supplementary health insurance. Check the reimbursements for acupuncture with your own insurance under alternative medicine. We are also a member of the NVA.

How do I make an appointment?
You can make an appointment by email, phone or online. Usually you can get in quite quickly, sometimes even the same week.

Do I need a referral?
No, you do not need a referral from your GP. You can contact an acupuncturist directly and make an appointment for an intake interview right away.

How many treatments do I need?
The number of treatments required varies by person and condition. On average, 5 treatments are required.

From what age can acupuncture be used?
Children can be treated with acupuncture from the age of one. They generally respond faster and sometimes better to acupuncture than adults, which means fewer treatments are needed.
